An Ohio Destination You Need To Know About: Wayne County

I was recently introduced to Wayne County, Ohio, in the heart of Ohio’s Amish Country. I quickly learned that there is an Amish presence, along with many outdoor activities in this beautiful county. My husband accompanied me on this road trip to a “new to me” area in Ohio.

We had fun exploring, meeting new people, and planning a return visit. With 36 hours, we were thrilled to experience all that we did. Here are some of our favorite finds in Wayne County, Ohio.

*Thank you to Wayne County, Ohio, for hosting us and sponsoring this post.

Where is Wayne County, Ohio?

We stayed in Wooster, a great middle-of-the-road location in the county. If you are driving to Wooster, here is some travel information:

  • Chicago, Illinois – 348 miles
  • St. Louis, Missouri – 511 miles
  • Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – 146 miles
  • Milwaukee, Wisconsin – 436 miles
  • Indianapolis, Indiana – 268 miles
  • Iowa City, Iowa – 576 miles

We incorporated our road trip from Iowa with an Indiana Fever game. If you are looking to change up your road trip for a Fever game, I’ve got a solution.

Arboretums are some of the most overlooked places in the United States. Over 100 acres of outdoor beauty await you at Secrest Arboretum, located at the Ohio State University’s Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC) Wooster Campus.

The gardens are open to visits every day of the year from sunrise to sunset. Parking and admission are free. Stroll the grounds and take it all in. The signage was excellent in identifying the plant/tree species. It was not so great in other ways. I highly recommend grabbing a map at the Welcome Center (we did), as it may help you navigate your way through the arboretum. Every nook and cranny lured us in, which led to a few detours. Place this arboretum at the top of your list- it’s worth every step.

This zoo did not disappoint, as we found ourselves asking more questions as we looked a all types of bugs in the zoo. With free parking and admission, this small bug zoo will quickly become your favorite little zoo.

Johnson Woods State Nature Preserve

Marshallville, OH 44645

Johnson Woods State Nature Preserve is one of Ohio’s largest remaining old-growth forests. The trees were incredible, as we felt like we were in the Redwoods in California!

The bogs and old forest are all visible as you stroll the walking trail. You can stroll the boardwalk and experience solitude in a new light. Walk the trail earlier in the day, as the sun reflects off the leaves on the trees. There is a parking lot across the road with free parking. There are no public restrooms, and pets are not allowed.

Lehman’s

4779 Kidron Rd
Kidron, OH 44618
https://www.lehmans.com

Lehman’s is a destination in itself.

This store offers everything from farm goods, cast iron skillets, baking supplies, canning goods, and more than 1000+ unique finds that are all American made. Plan to spend a minimum of 90 minutes exploring Lehman’s, as it’s a big place with a lot of things that will simplify your life. With a tagline of Products for Simple Living, you can’t go wrong with a stop here.

We spoke with an employee who told us people travel from all over the country to shop with them. Order your own copy of Lehman’s Catalog and shop until you drop. Better yet, make the road trip and take it all in with your own two eyes. This catalog reminded me of the Sears Roebuck Catalog that I adored as a youngster. Take a peek around, and you will find numerous collections.

I was attracted to all of the sewing machines that were dotting one of the walls.

Bike A Rail Trail In Ohio’s Amish Country

We hopped on the bike trail in Wayne County, in Fredericksburg. With more than 20 miles of paved trails, this trail is unique. It’s the first bike trail we have ridden on that allows horses on it.

The scenery was incredible and it was fun to see horses and buggies on the trail with us. We biked from Frederickburg to Millersburg and back. Make Wayne County your base county for this unique biking experience.

There are technically two lanes on the trail, one for horses and one for bikes and walkers. We quickly learned that everyone rides both sides of the trail, as our tires were dodging horse manure along the way. Our ebikes travel with us in our car, making it easy to get out and ride while traveling.

We had to pay attention to where we were riding, as we did not want to ride, and have our tires covered in horse manure. To our surprise, we dodged it all, as our tires were as clean as they could be.

Moreland Fruit Farm & Farm Market

1558 W Moreland Rd
Wooster, OH 44691

Moreland Fruit Farm & Fruit Market offers more than 100 acres of fruit and veggies. A short conversation with one of the owners, led us to driving through the peach orchard. He encouraged us to explore the property and we took off!

I can now say that I stood in a peach orchard with the aroma of fully ripe peaches, and what a scent to remember! The horses were out working the ground, and it was truly a step back in time. Moreland Fruit Farm & Fruit Market is a must-stop when you are in Wayne County. The seasons change, and the produce does, as well.

Hummingbird Hill Flower Farm

10055 South Funk Rd
Shreve, OH 44676
https://www.hummingbirdhillflowerfarm.com

Flower farms are popular, and what we loved about Hummingbird Hill Flower Farm was the scenery. We met with Joe, who owns the flower farm with his wife, Gina. Joe gave us a tour, and his passion for their work was evident. Joe and Gina want all of their guests to have an experience that they can only find on their farm. Want to stay longer on the farm? A “tiny house” and “yurt” are also lodging options on the property.

Events are seasonal and frequent on a beautiful hill bursting with color. Peak bloom is Mid-July through August, so plan accordingly.

Wayne County, Ohio, is one of those places that you “think” no longer exists. The pace is slower, and time seems to stop at times. Kick back, enjoy the sunrise, sunset, and the experiences that await you in this Northeast Ohio county.

We scratched the surface on our first visit to Wayne County, Ohio. Order your travel guide to Wayne County, and thank me later!
