Shawnee Mission Park is big. In fact, it offers 1,655 acres of a natural playground. The 120-acre lake, including a beach and marina make it a popular area for water enthusiasts.
Art Experiences In Abilene, Kansas
Mountain biking, equestrian trails, an archery range, and a New Art Nine Disc Golf Course, this park has it all. On the day I visited, the rain was pouring, but it was quite visible of the pride that the community of Shawnee has in its park system.
A Perfect Day In Lawrence, Kansas
Another highlight of Shawnee Mission Park is the Inclusive Playground that everybody can play in. I was impressed as I pulled up to the playground in the parking lot.
The large spider web looked like a lot of fun for many kids. The bike trails meandered throughout the park. I wished the rain had not been pouring, as I would have rented one of the bikes in the park. I also spotted an impressive bike repair station and water fountain along a trailhead.
The numerous shelter houses throughout the park are surrounded in beauty. This park has it all and I’d put it at the top of your list of things to do in Shawnee, Kansas.
Uniqiue Things To Do In Geary County, Kansas
Rize N Shine With Breakfast
Rize N Shine offers a hot breakfast, brunch, or lunch. I indulged in what I would call a traditional breakfast. I had two eggs over easy, bacon, toast, and a delightful serving of fruit.
The atmosphere is welcoming and it became quite clear that the locals LOVE this place! Anytime the locals are seated at a long table, I know the food is going to be a winner. Why not kick off your perfect day in Shawnee with a hot breakfast with friends?
Station 3 Coffee Shop
Station 3 Coffee Shop is not only a coffee shop, but it’s also a fun place to see art. As soon as you see the coffee shop from the road, the outside of the building looks incredible. The art work on the side of the building is worth the stop. I grabbed a cherry limeade, which was delicious.
Hot cocoa, iced coffes, lattes and mochas are all popular drinks. They also serve up pastries from their pastry case. The art continued throughout the building and I learned that this was a fire station from 1971-1989. It’s fun to see buildings like this used for something fun, as the history is tied into the name of the business.
Lunch At Paulo And Bill
Lunch at Paulo and Bill is sure to get your taste buds dancing. I opted for a grilled chicken breast sandwich, which included bacon, provolone, avocado, and chipotle cream cheese.
I must admit, the stone-oven flatbread pizzas looked very good. Several of them passedby our table as we were eating lunch. If you enjoy salmon, blackened shrimp, traditional sandwiches, and even lasagna, Paulo and Bill’s has all of the above on its lunch menu.

District Pour House + Kitchen – Shawnee
The District Pour House lured me in, as it sits on a corner and the outside is quite inviting. The midday visit was delightful, with a tempting seafood dip and a refreshing raspberry lemon drop dessert. Owners, Dand and Jenny, are very welcoming and their passion shows through their service, staff, and food.
Community pride runs strong in Shawnee, and the District Pour House is worth your time and money.

Family Tree Nursery
Family Tree Nursery is a destination all in itself. The beautiful flowers and arrangements scattered throughout the property are truly some of the best in the Midwest. As you enter the main building, swing into Cafe Equinox and grab your favorite coffee drink.
The greenhouses are always fun to stroll through. Fall is knocking, and the colors are changing throughout the nursery. The staff is very helpful and will gladly answer any questions you have. I noticed a beautiful table loaded with locally fresh produce, which made me smile.
Dinner at Hereford House
Many of you know that I love a good steak, and the Hereford House in Shawnee serves up a good one! I ordered a beautiful marbled ribeye with mashed potatoes and green beans – cooked to perfection. The best part of this menu was that they served bread pudding.
Of course, I had to order the white chocolate bread pudding, topped with sliced peaches. The bread pudding was all I needed to say that I had experienced a perfect day in Shawnee, Kansas. If you don’t travel for bread pudding, like I do, you may opt for carrot cake, warm apple crips, or event s’more pie. The desserts will top off your dinner in the perfect way.
Colorful Libations At Wild Child
I had heard about Wild Child from other people around the state of Kansas. The vibe and colorful libations make this a destination in itself. I knew that Melody and I needed to see what it is all about. Imagine my happiness to see that they had zero proof cocktails on their menu.
I ordered the Palomania- Grapefruit, watermelon, chipotle vinegar, and lime acids. In fact, there are ten zero proof drinks on their menu. That makes this non-alcoholic enthusiast happy! My perfect day in Shawnee, Kansas, came to an end after an evening sipping my Palomania at the bar in Wild Child. Until next time, Shawnee, Kansas- you are an incredible place to spend a day in the KC Metro area.
