A Perfect Day In Elgin, Illinois
One of the best smaller towns around the Chicagoland area is Elgin, Illinois. If a road trip is in your future, Elgin is calling your name.
This town continues to show me that they are welcoming and offer a wonderful experience for all of their visitors. Here are some tips on how you can have the perfect day in Elgin, Illinois.
*Full Disclosure: I was hosted by the Explore Elgin Area tourism department on my visit to Elgin.
A Flight of Coffee
There’s nothing like kicking your day off with a flight of coffee. I’m not a coffee drinker and I was able to find a sip or two that I thoroughly enjoyed. The East Side Cafe Coffee & Wine Bar knows how to serve up an amazing flight of coffee.
My favorite pick of the morning was the White Chocolate Raspberry. This non-coffee enthusiast was pleasantly surprised and I now talk about this flight of coffee in every coffee shop I visit.
Goat Yoga
Goat yoga is something that I have had on my radar for quite a while. Imagine the smile on my face when I learned that goat yoga was part of the itinerary on my visit to Elgin. Goat Yoga Chicago is an incredible agri-tourism experience, in Rural Illinois. Her farm is near Elgin and is a fantastic way to unwind and enjoy the great outdoors. Danielle’s passion for Goat Yoga did not disappoint. Her passion showed through how she interacted with her beloved goats.
I loved being able to get up close with the goats. I quickly learned that goat yoga is not for the faint of heart. Who knew that goats walking on your back could be so relaxing? I particularly got a kick out of how these noisy goats followed her to the pasture. If you are up for a fun agri-tourism adventure, book a class with Goat Yoga Chicago. This experience made for a perfect day in Elgin, Illinois.
Goebbert’s Farm & Garden Center is an incredible place to experience sunflowers. The sunflower field is seasonal. I would highly suggest planning a visit to the farm towards the end of summer, as the sunflowers are in full bloom.
Sunflowers For The Win
Later, into the fall, you can experience a popular corn maze, wagon rides, a haunted house, and all of the things that make fall special. Spring, summer, and fall are the times of the year when you can experience all that Goebbert’s has to offer.
The Stories Behind The Town
The Elgin History Museum showcases the colorful history of the area.
Elgin watches hail from Elgin, Illinois. The Elgin National Watch Company lives on through tools from the factory, including the 13th watch produced on the assembly line. A reproduced road race car is featured in the museum, where visitors can have their picture taken with Ralph Muford, the winner of the first road race held in 1910.
Traveling exhibits are on display, and offer reason to visit often. As with any historical museum, the more often you visit, the more immersed you will become. A short walk from the museum, you will be immersed in the Elgin Historic District. This area has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1983. With fifty-four houses, you will be immersed in history and architecture, making for a perfect day in Elgin, Illinois.
Return of the American Road Trip
Ice Cream
I experienced my first coffee flight in Elgin and it would make sense that I had my first ice cream flight here, as well.
Farm fresh scooped ice cream, makes for the best ice cream you could ever have. The Milk House quickly moved to the top of one of my favorite ice cream shops in the Midwest. I could taste the freshness in every bite. The ice cream is seasonal, sweet corn blueberry crumble was a necessity on a hot summer day in August. Nothing is better than ice cream with a friend.
This is an ice cream shop that I would recommend you visit often, as the flavors of the season are sure to keep your taste buds dancing. For a little more fun, why not rent their Vintage 1968 P10 Ice Cream Truck for your next event? Sound like a fun way to experience ice cream with friends.
Enjoy The Fox River Trail
I love that it’s relatively easy to find a park and wide-open spaces in the Elgin area. You can enjoy a meal and then walk it off on part of the 40+ miles of scenic trails in the area
The Fox River Trails offer walking, hiking, and biking in the warmer months. Once winter rolls around, break out your snowshoes and cross-country skis. A bonus when you visit Elgin, parking is free.
This is an example of one perfect day in Elgin. Come back another day for more fun, as you will enjoy the opportunity to recharge in this Chicago suburb. From goat yoga to coffee and ice cream, the perfect way to end your day is to stroll along the Fox River and watch the sunset. A sunset in the Midwest is sure to recharge your soul, as you reflect on your fun day and what tomorrow will bring.
