I recently had the opportunity to experience Jones County, Iowa. In no time at all, I had discovered the best things to do in Jones County. This beautiful Iowa county offers incredible scenery and charming towns that you will want to return to visit.

My biggest regret is that I only had one afternoon and an evening to spend in Jones County. I’m planning a return visit, and Camp Courageous is at the top of my to do list.

Where Is Jones County?
Jones County, Iowa, is conveniently located near Dubuque and Cedar Rapids. You can plan an Eastern Iowa road trip and include Jones County on your itinerary. Warning- Jones County, Iowa, has plenty of things to do.
Visit Stone City, Iowa
Stone City is home to a beautiful Iowa Freedom Rock. There are 99 counties in Iowa and you can find a beautiful Iowa Freedom Rock in all 99 of them. The Jones County Freedom Rock is in Stone City.

It is my “new” favorite rock. Grant Wood is featured on the rock and it sits in a beautiful community park.

Montincello, Iowa, offers an incredible historic downtown. The shopping and restaurant scene in strong on Main Street in Monticello, Iowa. Exploring Monticello’s Main Street is one of the best things to do in Jones County, Iowa.
The Whiffle Tree Mercantile showcases American Made products, candy, soda pop, antiques, clothing featuring the Midwest, and much more.
Swing in for an hour of fun and you will be glad you did. With more than 10,000 square feet to explore, you will be glad you stopped to shop.

A fun Storywalk Trail is located around Willow Park in Monticello, Iowa. You can experience a fun, family-friendly outdoor experience that incorporates nature and art in one space.
Follow the Storyboards as you walk the trail. You will be surrounded in nature, while you enjoy stories along the way.
Dine At The Market At The Tap
The Market At The Tap on Monticello’s Historic Main Street is a fun way to spend an evening in this historic town. The Speakeasy and delicious food will quickly win you over. Live events off an opportunity for you to experience food and fun in a unique setting. I was delighted when I saw bread pudding on the menu, and it turned out to be some of the best I have ever eaten.
This 1920s-themed restaurant offers fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Come hungry and enjoy the vibe that you will only find at The Market At The Tap. It’s fun to see how the market (the building was once home to a market) and the current restaurant bring todays foods together with the history of the establishment. Tip: Order the hamburger, nominated as one of Iowa’s top burgers in 2024.
Great Food And Music In Anamosa
Tyler & Downing’s Eatery will not disappoint. With more than 100 years, you will have an experience of a lifetime. The Downing family continues to operate this family owned establishment.
Today it serves customers through dining, drinking and music. The exposed brick and shopping carts on the wall showcase a little bit of the past as you indulge in a meal of deliciousness.
Celebrate Grant Wood
A visit to Jones County, Iowa, would not be complete without experiencing something related to Grant Wood, an award-winning American artist. His birthplace is Anamosa, Iowa, and today you can experience his art work and creativity throughout the county.
Riverside Cemetery, in Anamosa, is where Grant Wood is buried. He is buried near his mother Hattie and his sister Nan. If you are a Grant Wood fan or wish to learn more about him, place Jones County at the top your places to visit.
