Did you know that Badlands National Park is beautiful in the winter?
Many people don’t consider visiting a national park in the winter. Your annual national park pass works 365 days of the year. If you don’t have an annual pass, purchase yours at the park entrance. By purchasing an annual pass, you will be encouraged to learn more about where national parks are located across the United States. The National Park Service employees the best of the best. You will find a helpful face in many areas of the park. The Minuteman Missile National Historic Site is open for visitors and is on your way to Badlands National Park at Exit 131 on I-90. I did not stop at this historic site on this road trip, but will stop in the future. Employees of Badlands National Park and the Minuteman Missle National Historic Site are ready for you to visit.

Where Is Badlands National Park
Badlands National Park is located right off of South Dakota I-90 in Western South Dakota. There are two exits to the national park, Exit 131 and Exit 110, depending on what direction you are traveling from. Take the first exit that you see to Badlands National Park and drive the scenic loop. You will find yourself exiting the park at the other exit on I-90.
Travel Tip: Grab Breakfast at Wall Drug, at Exit 110
Become A Windshield Traveler
Everyone can become a windshield traveler when it’s bitter cold outdoors. Many incredible sights in Badlands National Park are visible through your car’s windshield. I noticed rabbits running all around, and when I turned out of a parking lot, I encountered a beautiful big horn sheep overlooking the park.
Pull Over Into Overlook Parking Areas
There are several parking areas along the 31 mile drive through Badlands National Park. Pull into all of them, as they each offer unique views of the park.
Break out your binoculars and see if you can view wildlife in the distance. Several of these parking areas have stairs that you can walk out on. These stairs are not treated in the winter, walk on them at your own risk. Be smart about where you walk and your winter visit will be a good one.
