Three Things To Experience While Visiting St. Augustine, Florida
St. Augustine, Florida, is America’s oldest city and is a must visit while in the state of Florida. I love that St. Augustine offers history, culture, and fun all in one! Here are three things you must experience while visiting St. Augustine, Florida.
Castillo De San Marcos
This historical monument is built on more than 20 acres and offers views of the Old City and water. Castillo De San Marcos is the oldest masonry and only extant 17th Century fort in North America.
The architecture and history within this monument are jaw dropping. Most visitors spend 1 1/2 -2 hours here, and I have to agree, that’s about perfect. With several cannons on display, kids of all ages are fascinated with what happened here hundreds of years ago. Parking can be a challenge in the Old City area. There is a parking lot located near the park entrance at Castillo De San Marcos, but I would suggest heading over to the public parking garage located on Castillo Drive, just off of Highway 1. The fee is a flat, daily rate, therefore; you will not need to worry about re-loading a parking meter throughout the day. Parking in St. Augustine can be challenging, and by pulling into the public parking garage, you will save time and money.
St. George Street
St. George Street is accessible by foot. Traffic is not allowed on this street, but you need to pay close attention crossing other streets; as you will cross traffic to continue walking on St. George Street.
Several shops and historical sites are located on this well know thoroughfare in St. Augustine. The oldest wooden school house can also be found on St. George Street. This historical schoolhouse is 200 years old. Looking for that special souvenir? St. George Street is sure to have it!
St. Augustine Beach
St. Augustine Beach is approximately 20 minutes from downtown and well worth it. Beach enthusiasts will appreciate what St. Augustine Beach has to offer. The ocean views are stunning and the public parks here are easy to get to and offer great outdoor fun. Beach volleyball, bird watching, dolphin viewing, fishing, and even bicycling along the beach are popular here. Ice cream shops are popular, as well as restaurants that feature outdoor seating with a fresh “catch” of the day on the menu.
St. Augustine, Florida has so much to offer and I’m excited to share more in the days to come. My recent visit was filled with sunshine, blue skies, and great people. Bed and breakfasts are very popular in the downtown area and I would highly recommend staying in one of them, should you opt to stay downtown St. Augustine. There are several oceanfront properties that are very welcoming to travelers out on St. Augustine Beach and I’m also excited to share some of those with you in the coming days.
From the historical sites to the beach, I have fun things to share. Do you enjoy St. Augustine, Florida? If so, what’s your favorite thing to see and do while in the area?
